Top Wedding Movies
July 10th, 2008 by silviaWedding season is in full swing, but for those of us who have a few spare Saturdays, why not spend the evening curled up on the couch with one of these wedding movies that is sure to get you in a feel-good state of mind? Or, if you’re the bride-to-be, why not host a movie night for your bridal party. I can guarantee these movies will alleviate all those pre-wedding jitters.
Father of the Bride
This is my all-time favorite wedding movie. I’ll admit it. I cry every time I watch this movie– I can’t help it! The part that always gets to me is just when Annie and Bryan are leaving the reception and George realizes that he couldn’t get to say good-bye to his only daughter– and just when you feel the tears welling up, Annie comes running back to give him a big hug and then she’s off. I’m feeling the tears just thinking about that scene. Of course, there is plenty of comedy to balance out the crying, making this a timeless classic.
My Best Friend’s Wedding
This movie has everything– spontaneous group singing, a high speed car chase involving a bread truck, and wicked plans that end up going horribly wrong. Cameron Diaz is an adorable Kimmy, but Julia Roberts’ lovable villainess, Juls, definitely steals the show. No matter how many times I watch this movie, I still cheer for Juls and secretly wish that she would succeed in stopping the wedding. But alas, our fabulous villainess is stuck in a purple dress, dancing with her gay BFF, while Cameron gets to keep the guy and their song.
Wedding Crashers
There are so many good things about this movie, I don’t even know where to begin. The script was wonderfully written, but it would be nothing without the perfect pairing of Owen Wilson (John) and Vince Vaughn (Jeremy). However, the star of the show for me will always be Isla Fisher and her stalker-like tendencies toward Jeremy. She is absolutely hilarious and almost makes us feel bad for the poor guy. Of course, Jane Seymour takes a close second as the cougar mom: Kitty Kat. If you have not seen this movie, watch it now. I guarantee you’ll be laughing so hard, that you will end up crying.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Coming from a big family, I definitely cringed a couple of times when the movie hit a little too close to home, but in the end I absolutely fell in love with it. The movie will keep you in stitches, and to this day, I still can’t look at a bundt cake without cracking up. Aside from that, the message is one that every girl should hear: You don’t need love to be happy; you need to be happy to fall in love.
Made of Honor
I absolutely loved this movie. While it is indeed very similar to My Best Friend’s Wedding, this movie can definitely stand on its own. Patrick Dempsey (Tom) makes a fine Julia Roberts and plays his role as a commitment-phobic player who has the girl of his dreams right in front of him to a key. Michelle Monaghan is super cute and you can’t help but cheer for Tom as he tries to (hilariously) win her back– some highlights include glow-in-the-dark thunder beads, a teeny kilt, and a tree toss. This movie truly proves that even the most reluctant of men can go to great lengths to win over the girl they love.
27 Dresses
Two words: James Marsden. He plays a cynical reporter that is secretly a sensitive injured soul. What’s not to love? Katherine Heigl is a sweetheart as the 27 time bridesmaid, but sometimes you just want to kick her so that she realizes that the perfect man is staring her in the face. My favorite part from the whole movie is definitely when Kevin finally admits to Jane that he’s actually a big softie. So cute!
American Wedding
Yes, this is one of the American Pie movies, and yes it can be a little on the immature side at times. However, they say that laughter is the best medicine and this movie provides plenty of opportunities to laugh. From the dog that swallows the wedding ring to an incident involving shaving and the wedding cake, this movie truly shows how it’s entirely possible to have a fabulous wedding even if every single possible thing that could go wrong does.
The Wedding Planner
This movie is every bride-to-be’s worst nightmare, but somehow nobody can possibly hate J. Lo or hottie McConaughey. I’ll even admit that this movie made me secretly wish that I would encounter a near-death experience by dumpster. It also made me want to become a wedding planner. I only kid, but seriously, the chemistry between Dr. Steve and Mary is intense, and by the end of the movie, I can guarantee that you will not feel sorry for the jilted bride.
Guess Who?
Bernie Mac is the all-powerful patriarch, Percy Jones, and Ashton Kutcher as Oliver Green is his perfect adversary. Oliver must prove his love for Theresa over and over before Percy Jones will finally accept him for his daughter. Of course, it would not be an Ashton Kutcher movie without some crazy hijinks and the go-kart race and manly tango do not disappoint. Nonetheless, there are definitely some pretty aww-worthy moments where Ashton tones down a bit and proves that he can be a real heartbreaker of a leading man.
The Bachelor
I think this movie must be every man’s dream: hordes of beautiful women chasing one man through the streets of San Francisco, and all he has to do is pick one and he can inherit $100 million dollars. Renee Zellwegger looks beautiful in this movie, and you keep hoping that Jimmie will grow up and finally get his proposal right. Of course, it is rather hilarious watching him go through all the Miss Wrongs out there to realize that the only woman for him is Anne.
Alright, I’ve shared my favorites. Leave me some comments and tell me about your own favorite wedding movies.

What a great idea, a wedding movie night for the bridal party would be a wonderful way for everyone to get to know each other (if they don’t already), I love it!

Awesome list you have. However, the first movie that comes to my mind is “The Wedding Singer” The comedy, the romance, the singing, well maybe not as much the singing. It’s not your common prince charming marring the princess perfect but that’s why I think it’s so great. I think the movie is realistic in that to achieve marriage happiness you don’t need to look for the good looking or the rich; you just need to find someone that gets you and that you can see a future in growing old together.

How about “The Wedding Date” with Debra Messing and Dermot Mulroney and “The Wedding Singer” with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler? I LOVE wedding movies! =)
