I got the call and on the other end of the line was my friend…trying to be casual but clearly ecstatic with news that she’s engaged! I’ve been getting a lot of these calls lately. Of course I ask, “how did he pop the question?!” It happened at Gary Danko which is only the best restaurant in San Francisco. The food is incomparable and they offer service to match. When my friends told their server that they just got engaged, he brought out a lovely wine bottle opener for them as a gift. I thought this was sweet. But then, she tells me, after they left the restaurant and had gone halfway up a steep hill towards their car they heard someone calling after them. The maitre d’ had chased them up the hill and waved them down to offer them a bottle of champagne with which to celebrate the momentous occasion. I mean excellent service is one thing, but this was way above and beyond what one could expect from a restaurant, even one that had earned all 5 stars! Needless to say, my friends will be returning to Gary Danko for their anniversaries. Boys and girls, the moral of the story is if you’re not planning an elaborate proposal, then at least pick a great restaurant. Half your work will be done for you. Choose one that you’ll want to return to year after year.
