Charleston's ABC News came up with a list of eye-catching catering trends that are fun and accessible at the same time. To give just a few examples, they recommended serving (non-alcoholic) shots of soup as hors d'oeuvres, caffeinated desserts such as espresso brownies, and introducing a luau theme (but skip the plastic flowers if you can).

Comfort foods also work well for special occasions - just give then an unexpected twist. Have fun with the presentation by wrapping fries or burgers in monogrammed paper, the news source suggested.

Other scintillating options include edible menus, do-it-yourself desserts and dipping stations for appetizers. Consider setting up an hors d'oeuvres bar where guests can watch their snacks being prepared.

If you do choose to go the non-traditional route with your catering, consider a few unexpected wedding favors to match. Mini lanterns or packs of playing cards with personalized labels will provide the perfect finishing touch.
