The names we give babies apparently no longer just reflect on the little ones.
Laura Wattenberg, author of The Baby Name Wizard, told MSNBC that "we're in the middle of a baby-naming revolution." Baby name meanings convey more than they ever did before about parents as options have become more numerous and diverse, she explained, and "parents are putting a much higher premium on distinctiveness."
As the diversity in common names has multiplied more than fivefold in the past 60 years, the implication according to Wattenberg is that "the more diverse naming styles become, the more we are going to read into somebody's name."
With all these options, some parents can get overwhelmed, or even resort to Facebook polls to help them decide.
Instead of engaging a mass of anonymous internet users, why not make it a central focus at your baby shower? Even if you already have a name picked out, it would be fun for guests to come up with their own name ideas and explain the significance of their choices. If you prefer to keep it light, try a game of baby name bingo.
