He put a ring on it! Plan a party to celebrate

If you're the parent of a recently engaged son or daughter, it's enticing to want to dive right in and send out engagement party invitations. However, it may be best to give the couple at least a few weeks to enjoy their own moment.

Although you likely won't send out invitations immediately after the engagement, you can still plan the party. For cost-effective purposes, you may want to consider hosting the event at your own house. You may have more than 30 people showing up and paying for everyone's dinner can prove costly at a restaurant or venue. However, wherever you decide to have the party, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1) The guest list can be small. You should keep the invites to those who are closest to the family. Even if you have to leave out a few friends, here and there, remember that you're on a budget and you can't satisfy everyone. Once you have the guest list prepared, don't print those invitations just yet.

2) Pick an appropriate venue and party setting. If you plan on inviting more than 40-50 people, it may be more beneficial to have a cocktail party. Friends and family from both sides will be able to interact with each other, which is especially convenient if this is the first time both families are getting together.

3) Prepare your invitations according to the season. If your engagement party is this fall, send out personalized cards, such as autumn leaves save the date cards or personalized vintage Hollywood cards.

4) Decorate the area freely. Who said less is more? When it comes to party decor, it may be best to go crazy in order to highlight the celebratory nature of the affair. Light a bunch of crystal diamond tea light holders and place lovebird salt and pepper shakers at each table. Also, remember to keep the colors simple and consistent.

This event is all about two things: Celebrating the newly-engaged and giving both families the opportunity to meet one another. With a positive attitude and timely planning, you're likely to have an easy time coordinating and a great time partying.
