Scavenger hunt birthday parties aren't just for kids

Do you have a birthday party coming up that you'd like to give a unique touch to? There are plenty of great themes out there, but have you thought about updating a beloved children's activity? Most of us took part in a few scavenger hunts back in the day, and just because you aren't at summer camp anymore doesn't mean you can't have a great time throwing another one. If an adult scavenger hunt sounds like something you and your friends could enjoy, here are some tips to help ensure it's a great time.

Invite as many people as you can and encourage your friends to organize themselves into small teams - a couples' competition works particularly well for this, though it's not necessary. It's a good idea to have everyone gather in a single location for a little bit of mingling before they set off on the hunt - it's the perfect opportunity for an informal potluck! If the weather is nice, find a picnic table and drape a circles design table decoration over it. You can even place mini lantern tealight holders around the yard - as the sun goes down, they'll cast a lovely glow throughout the space.

After everyone's eaten, it's time to begin the hunt. Make sure you only list items that can be found throughout your neighborhood - they should be fairly common, such as a fast food wrapper or a recent TV Guide. Make sure to include a few specialties as well, such as a picture of the local movie theater's marquee! As the host, you may not have very much to do while the hunt is going on, so kick back and relax for a couple of hours until guests start to show up again.

As far as prizes go, give the winning hunters a bag full of great stuff like cocktail infusion flavors and star wine bottle stoppers. Don't let everyone else leave empty-handed, though! Hand out personalized mini glass candy birthday jars for those who didn't take home the grand prize - they'll at least have something sweet to munch on while driving back home. Feel free to let the party go on well after the scavenger hunt has ended. Searching for treasure tends to work up an appetite!
